Find Your Sunscreen Soulmate

by Lauren Gindoff

Finding the one can be tricky. Scented or unscented? Mineral or chemical? Spray or stick?

By now we hope you’ve realized we’re talking about sunscreen. The good news: you’re in the right place. We’re here to share sunscreen tips every skin type will love.

Sunscreen for Acne-Prone Skin

Rumor has it that sun exposure makes your acne go away. Well, whoever’s spreading this one is so not your friend. Sun exposure can have damaging effects on your skin, especially if you are prone to breakouts. We’re talking acne scars. Ugh. Plus, some acne treatments can make your skin even more sensitive to the sun.

So, to clear the air, everyone has to wear sunscreen. Yup, even if you have acne-prone skin. If that’s you - non-greasy, oil-free formulas are going to work wonders. Look for non-comedogenic sunscreen which won’t clog your pores. And if your skin is extra oily, try a gel sunscreen formula to help soak up unwanted shine.

Sunscreen for Aging Skin

Age is just a number! This is especially true when it comes to sunscreen. From your teens to retirement, “all day every day” should be your SPF motto. It’s true that the signs of aging skin (think age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles) are a necessary evil of getting older. But daily sunscreen use is the first step to looking amazing at any age.

Mineral and chemical sunscreens are both a-okay, so follow your heart in the isle! However, the form of your sunscreen may start to play a bigger role as you get older. You may find that spray sunscreens and sunscreen sticks are easier to apply on your body than lotions or creams. And lastly, make sure you’re picking a high SPF (70-100+) for your face to keep that pretty complexion of yours.

Sunscreen for Eczema

Eczema is super common. In fact, 30 million Americans have it. But it also makes your skin more vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays. So, what kind of SPF is best?

If you have eczema, you’ll want to look for mineral-based sunscreens. That means they’re formulated with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Break-up with sunscreens that contain alcohol, fragrances and dyes. And of course, always look for the “broad spectrum” label.

Not to brag, but the National Eczema Association gave several Neutrogena® mineral sunscreens their seal of approval.

Sunscreen for Sensitive Skin

We like our sunscreen like we like our sweethearts: strong and sensitive. But the perfect match can be hard to find! Rashes and reactions can turn a beach day into a bad day before you know it. So, make sure your SPF has all the right qualities.

A great option for sensitive skin is mineral sunscreen. Look for ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, these provide strong protection and are sensitive on skin. Another trick? Try a sunscreen for babies. These are the gentlest of formulas and most often don’t include added stuff like fragrances or dyes.

But if you’ve been burned before (pun intended), always test a small amount on your skin and wait 24 hours to see if you react negatively.

Sunscreen for Sweaty Skin

You lift, bro? Even though sweaty skin isn’t really a condition, it certainly requires a specific kind of protection. If you work out daily, or just spend a lot of time outside, you’ll need sunscreen that can survive the hours of sun exposure (and well, moisture) that all that activity brings.

Chemical sunscreen is your workout bae. What to look for? Water or sweat resistant formulas and products labeled “sport.” Always apply 15 minutes before you head out and reapply as often as directed on the bottle.
